Frequently asked questions

Answers to common questions about free services, trust levels, privacy, and the planned launch.

How can the services be free?

We plan to fund the free tier through a public reserve of TLDT tokens. The proposed reserve would sell a limited amount of tokens each month to cover domain, server, and email expenses, with public reports showing the money coming in and going out. This funding system is still being developed. Read more on our Transparency page.

Is it really free? What's the catch?

The planned free tier does not require a credit card or a timed trial. There are limits: one free bundle per person, service allowances based on trust level, and usage rules to prevent abuse. Free domain renewals require you to sign in at least once every 12 months and keep the domain in good standing. Paid upgrades will be optional.

What is TLDT?

TLDT is the planned token for the service's payment and reserve system. The proposal is to accept it for paid upgrades and use a public reserve to help fund the free tier. The token has not launched and is not for sale. We do not promote it as an investment. The proposed details are at tldomaintoken.com.

Can I transfer my domain to another registrar?

Yes, subject to applicable ICANN and registry transfer rules, including any restrictions after initial registration or in certain dispute or abuse situations. We will not hold a transfer solely because of an unpaid service bill when the applicable rules require the transfer to proceed. We are also considering a requirement to repay the original wholesale registration cost if you transfer a free domain before its free term ends. That proposed fee is under legal review and is not a final policy. Any approved fee would be disclosed before registration and again before you request a transfer.

What happens when my free registration term ends?

An eligible free domain is planned to renew for the same term at no charge, as long as you've signed in during the previous 12 months and the domain remains in good standing. If those conditions are not met, the domain may expire. We'll send notices before and after the expiration date.

How much email storage is included?

We're considering one shared 5 GB storage pool per account. The final limit has not been set, and all addresses and mailboxes on the account would share that pool. We'll publish the confirmed limit before the service goes live.

Can I host a website on the free VPS?

That's the plan. Free VPS hosting will include IPv6 and a shared web gateway that can make a website reachable over IPv4 using its hostname. Sending email directly from a free VPS will be blocked. Live VPS hosting is not available during the closed beta.

What activities are prohibited?

Phishing, malware, scams, unsolicited bulk email, unauthorized scanning, cryptocurrency mining on free servers, open proxies, and illegal or infringing content. See our acceptable use rules. Serious abuse can lead to immediate suspension, and users have 14 days to appeal after a suspension notice.

Do you sell my information or use advertising trackers?

No. Our stated policy is not to sell personal information, show advertising, or use advertising trackers. The account system uses cookies only to keep you signed in and to finish email confirmation. See our privacy notice for details about the information needed to run the service and prevent abuse.

When will the service launch?

We're running a closed beta now. The current plan is to open the public beta before the proposed February 2027 token launch and to make all planned free services available by April 1, 2027. These dates are targets and may change. During the closed beta, registrations and services in the dashboard are simulated.
